The Best Blender for Green Smoothies

best-blender-for-smoothies

So you’ve heard the infomercials, you’re ready to take on the green smoothie challenge and possibly change your life for the better! The next question you ask yourself (as I did at the time) – what’s the best blender for smoothies? …hence the title of this article.

Well I’ve always been a big believer of you get what you pay for as it was drilled into me from an early age. The statement holds true in the blending world and here’s why. I started out with the Magic Bullet to give it a go, but quickly found out it was good at the simple stuff, not harder stuff. I then decided to upgrade to a Vitamix S30, and have never looked back.

This article is in no way a diss on the cheaper brands – in fact they are a great place to get started.

And now as promised; down to the review…

To Begin..

The first question you need to ask your self is – what are you going to place into your creation? If you plan on adding fresh ingredients such as banana, raspberries, blueberries, spinach and apples to name a few, you will be safe with on the cheaper brands. If you decided green smoothies are for you and want to step up the game, you can upgrade to a better machine like I did.

If you plan on incorporating harder ingredients into the mix like nuts or frozen ingredients such as ice or berries (not always in season) – the cheaper brands won’t cut it. They might at best chop them down into smaller pieces, but your green smoothie wont nearly be as drinkable. You’ll find chunks of this and that in the mix.

There are other advantage to the traditional brands (and yes more expensive) that you’ll discover as you start to use them. I’m not always in the mood for a green smoothie, but want to stay on the healthy side, so I make hot soups! Believe you me, some of the soups I have created are close to what you’ll find in a restaurant!

Down to the selections…

My Top Three Picks

My site has many side by side comparisons, so feel free to have a poke around and watch some of the videos. That being said, the top three in my opinion are the NutriBullet Pro 900, Magic Bullet and for the more adventurous, the Vitamix S30 (what I use).

Vitamix S30

Now you need to understand that I’m not trying to peddle you the Vitamix S30 – but it truly is the best blender for smoothies I’ve used. The first thing I noticed when taking it out of the box is the superior build quality and finish (and it looks flash on my kitchen bench). The motor carries 790 watts of power – strong enough to power through the toughest of ingredients and its connections between the jug and base are metal for durability.

The rounded design of the jug allows for the ingredients to pass through the blade housing, then make their way up the outer edge of the jug to begin the cycle again unhindered. The blades in the housing are not sharp (a unique feature of Vitamix) and safe to touch when it comes time to washup.

The unit also comes with double insulated cups that you can use in place of the jug when blending. To do so, add you ingredients in to the portable cup and screw on the blade housing. Once blended, detach the blade housing, pop on your portable lid and take to work. If the ingredients are hot / cold – the double insulated walls will ensure they hold the temperature for longer.

The Vitamix S30 retails for around $330.00, with the refurbished models costing less. The new blenders come with a 5 year warranty. The refurbished models are a great option as the device is returned to the Vitamix factory where it goes through a detailed check list (not some doggy bloke out the back with a soldering iron). Once repaired, the blender is packed with brand new blade, jug(s) and accessories. The refurbished unit also comes with a 5 year warranty.

NutriBullet Pro 900

Next on my list of blender is the NutriBullet Pro 900. Produced by the same maker as the Magic Bullet, the NutriBullet Pro comes packed with a more powerful 900 watts motor. Priced in the $90 range, it’s a step up from the Magic Bullet in terms of power and performance.

This unit suffers from the same problems as the Magic Bullet in that it has no shut off mechanism for overheating and the majority of its parts are plastic. The outer casing has a metal copper finish to it that’s easy on the eyes.

The powerful motor allows the blender to tackle tougher ingredients such as ice, nuts and other solids, but doesn’t always provided consistence results – depending on what you add. The NutriBullet Pro offers superior results to the Magic Bullet.

As both the Magic bullet and the NutriBullet use their cup as the jug, neither allow for ventilation, so hot beverages are out or the question.

These devices are extremely easy to clean if you don’t plan on using a dishwasher. Simply add a little dishwashing detergent to some cold water and blend for a couple of seconds. You’ll need wipe down the base every now and again – especially the gasket (small rubber ring that sits between the cup and the base).

Magic Bullet

The Magic Bullet is the perfect blender for people wanting to get their feet wet – at an entry level price. Amazon retails the blender for around $50 – warranty inclusive. It’s not very powerful, only packing 250 watts, but perfect if you plan on using soft ingredients in your master piece.

You do get what you pay for with this unit when it comes to build quality. The gears that join the cup to the base of the blender are made of plastic. If fact, most of the parts that go into this blender are to keep the cost low. These plastic parts work well in the beginning, but rode with regular use.

If you take a look through the Amazon reviews of the product – there have been reports of the motor burning out. In most cases this is caused by people expecting the Magic Bullet to tackle ice and harder ingredients. The motor will work extra hard to achieve the blend, tho, as the blender has no shut off meconium that detects over heating (solid brands have this built in) – it will do just that, burn out – so be for warned!

Conclusion

So there you have it folks, to wrap it all up – if you are new creating green smoothies and want to give it a shot, go for the Magic Bullet. Keep in mind you can always upgrade once you know green smoothies are for you.

If you can afford a little more – the NutriBullet Pro 900 will do a better job at soft and harder ingredients. Keep in mind here, that like the Magic Bullet – you won’t always achieve the smooth texture that makes the green smoothie drinkable if you use solid ingredients.

The best smoothie blender in this line up and my person favourite is the Vitamix S30. You can expect a liquid drink without the chunks – every time. You can vary into soups, dips and ice cream. The Vitamix is also demonstrated to be the best blender for crushing ice. The only limit with this device is your imagination.
